best rope for splt tail mainsheet

I have recently replaced my split tail main sheet using Gemini. The split was very easy to do, as was the splice onto the transom fittings. 

The one problem I had was with finishing the outer core.  I was hoping I could taper it into the inner for a nice clean splice, but this proved difficult with the double inner cores preventing the outer from being threaded inside them - I couldnt get the inners to open out enough to be able to feed the outer inside.

The second attempt was to split the outer and taper each half down each of the splits of the tail, but that didn't hold in place and looked a mess.

In the end, I just trimmed the outer and whipped and stitched it, which then did make me wonder if it was worth the additional cost of using Gemini rather than a more conventional split tail with a whipped and stitched tail.

The other downside is that it is only available in 7mm I would prefer 8mm.
