Hi all! Sorry, this is going to be a very obvious question! I recently bought an old firefly, which is my first centreboard boat (always used daggerboards like topper etc). First time I capsized the board dropped back into the hull (as might be expected) but then fell off entirely as its attached with a slot in the centreboard rather than just a hole with a bolt through. Obviously I didn't lose it as it was still attached to the boat but I couldn't right the boat with no board to get leverage on. What can I do to prevent it dropping without tying it down, which would cause damage in the event of grounding.... Thanks for the help Timmy |

use a releasable cam cleat to hold it down. If you hit the putty it will release without to much damage.

I have also just recently bought an older Firefly, fitted with an alloy plate. Many people are probably not aware of the potential problems; i)The centreplate dropping back into its slot under its own weight during a capsize. ii)The centreplate (if slotted) dropping out of its housing (more likely if boat inverts). The potential remedies I have seen are; i)Have a snap shackle attatched by shockcord to the rear of the casing to 'anchor' the centerplate downwards, whilst still allowing momement. ii)A small anchor point on the outside of the centreplate case at/around the pivot point, with a safety lanyard attatched, running to the handle with very little slack, preventing the plate dropping out. |
