just bought a tatty old 29er for very cheap. planning to spend some time and money making it racing spec again to sail with a mate at uni (and then sell if that doesnt work out)

right, well first off im looking for a good source of progrip (for a 29er) i remember someone sending me a link to some cheap stuff (russ mabe?). any ideas people would be greatly appreciated (other stuff accepted aslong as it doesnt make a boat look rubbish.....)

then the halyards are terrible. (they have half vectran/ spectran - whatever the expensive non stretch stuff is). the other half is 3strand spliced back into itself. now this stuff is really fat and so doesnt go up the hole in the mast well. im thinking of replacing with 1.5/ 2mm stuff which i can splice into another loop (this end doesnt take any load). there are so many different names so which is the stuff i need?

then downhaul/kicker. tempted with the laser control line stuff but any other/better suggestions?

and lastly we have kite sheets. now these appear to be laser mainsheet stuff but i fancy some maffioli stuff really (any point?)

what diameter shroud pins does the 29er use as i hate too many pins with rings.....

now im sure i will have forgotted stuff so will have to post more as it goes on.

P.S, just remembered, what is the stuff i want to glue the progrip/ non slip stuff down?

cheers guys and gals,
tom

Use Evostick to stick down, dont sniff it though for a cheap student high!!

LDC, ahave got the full Maffolli Range in and at some pretty keen prices, your best to call them up as the catalogue and the website dont list all they have!!  They do a maffolli look rope which is better for kite sheets, i have it in sexy silver!!  Good Luck, post some before and after picks!

Last time I went to buy evo stick from B&Q I got ID'd because they wouldn't sell it to me unless I could prove I was over 21.  Rather irritatedly, I said to the dippy woman at the till "Am I missing something here?  Am I less likely to get myself high just because I have a little card telling you a date?".

But it is the best stuff as far as im aware for getting that progrip down.

168? I used to know that boat! I wonder if its still got the kite pole I repaired for the first owner?

The three strand on the halyards always used to go up the tube OK: are you sure you want to spend money on something that makes no difference to performance? There are probably more important priorities.

Again the kite sheets really will make damn all difference, not much point in wasting money.

The important strings were all good stuff last time I saw the boat so unless they are fraying I doubt its worth bothering.

What you do want to do is to wash out every block on the boat, get all the salt and sand out, and then check that they are all free running, especially under load and have no excess play. That boat has done a few miles, and some of the gear is probably getting tired... Getting all the blocks running smoothly and freely will make an unbelieveable difference to how good the boat feels.

Don't forget to really clean off surfaces well before you try to glue progrip on them and particularly (evil job) remove all old glue...

As I keep trying to emphasise to our marketing bod, in adhesion, surface prep is key. You'll never get a good bond to a rubbish surface.

yes it does still have the repaired pole. the previous owner didnt even know anything about it which was how i managed to get it so cheaply.

RE the halyards, the 3strand stuff is just way too fat to fit up the mast where the splicing is. you have to ram it through with a screwdriver. im after the thinnest stuff available for that (saves weight but more importantly its cheaper).

most of the blocks are already off and soaking in marge tubs. the hull will then get a good clean and polish to make it lovely and shiny then new pro grip (and elastics - which are dead). should get it looking good again.
