I recently bought my first sail boat, a 1982 laser 2 in great
condition, however the main sail is blown out. I purchased a new main sail dubbed practice sail. Not a Vangaurd sail, but a Intensity sail. The problem is the bolt rope diameter on the Intensity sail is 0.34" diameter, the original laser 2 Vangaurd sail bolt rope is 0.27" diameter. The old sail fits nicely into the mast channel groove, the new sail will not fit. Can someone inform me of the proper luff bolt rope diameter. Measure there sail. I was sold a sail with the wrong bolt rope? Please help. Thank you. ![]() |

I know the man you need! His nickname on this forum is Razerlarf but doesn't visit very often. You can email him at twosnews@which.net. All Laser2 sailors who've done a few opens will know Mike Croker (National champion this year, European last year, Lancing SC prominent member). He'll be happy to help.

The bolt rope on my newish sail is .307 although measuring something soft with a vernier is iffy. Probably means an 8mm bolt rope. .....just measured the extrusion on the mast, the bolt rope channel is 10mm (.39 inch) dia and the luff slot is 4.3 (.173 inch). I would have thought your slightly bigger rope would fit, but obviously not........I haven't got the bottom mast here so I don't know how wide the apperture is at the bottom of the slot where you feed the sail in. (that could be where the problem lies) ....sorry I can't be of more help. I would ring the sail makers and speak to them. If you want to get more out of the old sail. check the luff length. The bolt ropes shrink over the years (3 inches on my old sail). Unpick the stitching that captures the bolt rop at the foot, let the bolt rope slide up the required amount and re-stitch the bolt rope.......this removes some (not all) of the bagginess and gives you back some cunningham control.
Here's a link to the Laser 2 e-mail group, if you register you will be able to chat to the top L2 sailors UK (Mike Croker included). There's also tons of usefull info on everything L2:- http://groups.yahoo.com/group/uklaser2/ Edited by GK.LaserII |

Sounds like another recent thread on laser sails, Could it be that the north american Laser 2's have different mast/sails. Sounds like the Insails sail fits the Uk masts

Good point and that may be the case although I believe the extrusion for all masts was made by Alcan and should ( he said naively The mast dimensions I gave above were from an old L2 topmast section of similar vintage, if blueberry checks his topmast and there is a difference, that's the answer. .........as BNF said Mike Croker will know. |

I thank everyone that replied and or thought about the delima I had experienced with the Intensity sail I had purchased here in the U.S. for my Laser2. With the help of you and incredible people we have become friends with all because of this sailboat, I am happy to reply the sail is fixed and will work fine. The bolt rope diameter was indeed too large. Living here in the Columbia Gorge with wind surfing and sail lofts on several corners of town I found one that could stitch on the required 8 mm diameter bolt rope. Thank you all, I hope someday I can help one of you. Harold Fischer |
