how about smoothing it off and then simply spraying with a few coats of car spray? surely that will be up to the job and will be cheap and easy to apply.....

Car aerosols get suprisingly expensive if you buy it in quantity, and the result is thin and easily scratched. The two pot poly will burnish and polish down better and last longer. Worth it IMHO.

fair enough, i would have thought with a centreboard it wouldnt matter (you need to keep it off the bottom anyway and it stays safe in the slot on shore...

im pretty sure if you were doing a centreboard then one of halfords larger cans would do the job (about £7)

What we used to do with laser foils was use car body primer (white) its cheap, more or less the right colour and does not need much finishing.  I don't think it will work as well on glass foils, but it depends on the severity of the damage and the size of the repair.
