I just wondered if anyone had any suggestions: I'm shortly going to be trailing a Dart 15 halfway across the country but have a problem with the masts - the car we're using doesn't have a roof rack and at the moment the two mast halfs are just lying on top of the tramp. Clearly I can't trail it like this and in the absence of dedicated fixings on the trailer I need to find a way of safely securing the two mast halves during the journey (safe for other road users and safe for the masts/boat. Anyone have any suggestions please? |

I'd maybe just strap each section to a hull, protecting with carpet offcuts. Done securely enough it should be OK. But your best bet is contacting the Spint15 association via their website. Sprint Bob is also a regular on this forum (although I've not seen him post recently) and he is a goldmine of info. Try PMing him. |

Thanks Dave - that site was my first port of call (pardon the pun) but sadly the webmaster there hasn't authorised my registration yet so i'm unable to post messages of my own.

Have you got a mast cradle fitted to your trailer. I tow my Dart 18 broken down with all the bits (spars, tramp, sails etc.) in the trailer box and my mast lays in a cradle. It runs the full length of the trailer and hangs over the roof of the car roughly up to the sun roof. Can you leave your mast in one piece and do the same? If not, I'd strap the pieces to the hulls or even the trailer if you have a suitable place? On a separate note, I'd advise taking the tramp off the boat. I used to have an 'all-up trailer' and found that the tramp adds extra windage when driving - actually slowing me down. Not that I condone driving at high speed when towing

As said above, but I would last to the cross beam using carpet to protect and then tightly secure using the good old fashion Boy scout method.
But yes Sprintbob is on here and I think is the class rep, if not find an email addy on the site and email the question there. |

if you have a mast support i would use that. in my rs300 i tow the mast with the 2 parts together. run the main halyard down along the outside of the mast (tape in place at intervals) and tie it to something on the lower section and tighten it as much as you can. this will stop the mast separating. i then sit the mast on a structure i made which fits onto the pintles (you could probably rest yours on the back beam or tramp. tie the mast to each hull (with a wrap around the mast) use lots of rope. bungee is also very good as if you get it tighter it les the thing in question move less than rope does. (i do this because the lower section doesnt fit in the boat) but if yours will fit ontop of the hull that may be easier. PAD WELL!!!!! |

Hi Jas, As you have a 2 piece mast it is fairly easy to do as advised above. Take some carpet bits to wrap around the mast sections where they lay on the beams. And then lash the mast sections to the beams fore and aft. Do it adjacent to one hull (or both) in the space which is not impeded by the trampoline. Make sure there are no contact points between the mast sections and the boat. Sorry if this is too late I have just returned from a couple of weeks away. Regards Bob PS Welcome to the Sprint 15 "Club" |
