Hi

Slightly different problem to the thread where the daggerboard is too big ..

My daggerboard slot is too loose. What do people recomend to pad it out so that the board is held reasonably tightly?

I was told the boat used to have some kind of soft carpety stuff in the slot, but it was removed as the previous owner never raised the board. (just tied it down with elastic )

Cheers

Progrip has been used and works well. Furry tape is also a good idea.

Laser sell this stuff:-

...but I resent buying anything from Laser so I use carpet off cuts. 1.5 inches wide glued into the daggerboard slot  top and bottom with solvent based evostik. Once the carpet is in place push the dagger board in to hold it in place until the glue dries..... not sure this will work on your boat as I don't know how much of a gap your trying to fill.

Only really needs about 2mm each side.

I am looking at maybe getting some Vecro and using the "soft" side of that at the bottom of the slot, and just leaving it as it is at the top for now ... just to see if the Velcro will last for more than a few weeks!

The Laser carpet looks like the right stuff I think.

Tom - How long will Japtape last? Will it work fine with its own self adhesive, or will it need some other glue ( as above, evostick ) to keep it solid?

Thanks for all the answers so far!

James.. Velcro wont last that long. the Spice has it and it is coming off, as you possibly have seen.

i reckon that carpet will be the best bet, im going to sort out mine soon as well.
And what is Jap Tape?

Jap tape .. according to Holt is ... "Ribbed PTFE Tape"

http://www.holtperformance.com/accessories/detail.asp?line=j ap

Bit of research for the week is done ... But before I close the thread ...

My Vareo's daggerboard has had a bit of a bashing in its past. How would be best to fill a crack that is only a few mm wide, but runs the full length of the tip of the board? There has been some loss of shape from its repeated meetings with gravel or rock or sand ( or something ... ) and I know I wont be able to build the shape back up accuratley, but I think something needs to be done about the crack. Would smearing Gelcoat Filler over it ( and down into the gap ) work, or would standard "marine filler" work better?

The vareo has some fluffy stuff around the top and bottom of the board which you can get from RS. In theory it's self adhesive, but that doesn't last, and we use a contact adhesive to put them on. They do take a bashing, and need renewing from time to time.

I've used a variety of different things in the past. The Jap tape works well as long as you are bonding onto a clean and flat surface, suggest you use some rubbing alcohol or acetone to clean it off before you stick it on. Also, sticky back velcro works well (the furry side) and you can buy that at your local Woolies or anywhere similar. Just make sure its good and clean or nothing will stick for long.
