I have noticed on my dutchmand that the bottom of the mast wobbles a fair amount when in choppy conditions. Has anyone ever fitted lower shrouds to a dutchman? i am not really interested in keeping her 'within rules' but i want to make her as strong as poss to ba able to go to sea without too much worry. The mast is an old proctor goldspar.
I also wonder if renewing the spreaders might help this too- they are pretty useless but without reference to another boat i can't really make judgement to see what they should be like. |

All FD's have lower shrouds - should be adjustable, as should shrouds and genoa halyard. Ideally you need around 24:1 on the shrouds, 12:1 on halyard and lowers. Lowers are best attached at gooseneck height, and should come back to the floor as far outboard as possible, and aft of the shrouds. If the mast is wobbly at gooseneck or lower, I'd guess it's not a good fit in the mast gate - assuming you have one? Rigging is barely controlled at all in the FD rules, so don't lose too much sleep over that! If you fancy a trip down to Bewl Valley one weekend, you could pinch some ideas from my boat, which is pretty much up to current thinking. Neil |

My one has no mast gate at all. Wierd iknow. I will try and fit some lower
shrouds to the mast this week as the mast almost jumps around when it gets choppy. I have adjusters on the side shrouds and a bottle on the forestay. The genny has a lever to tension it up but that is as far as it goes really. Chris |
