Recently had a holiday at Centre Parcs in Holland and sailed this on Grevelingenmere - superb sailing and very reasonable hire rates BTW. Anyone know what it is? Sail symbol was a swallow / swift type bird. |

I think it's a Valke (falcon in Dutch, I think).

It's indeed a Valk. Designed by Van de Stadt. A very practical boat, you're on the water in 5 minutes. You can sail it on your own or with 5 perons. It weights 600 kilo with 17,5 m2 upwind. The most popular sailingboat in Holland and adapted to dutch circumstances; draft of only 60 cm, mastheight fits with bridges on mainchannel (max. 7 meters, if you lower the "gaffel", otherwise you just lower the mast. It's a very nice holidayboat, you 're suppost to be able to sleep on it with 4 persons, but 2 is a bit more comfortable. I've sailed it a lot and like it, especial when it's windy. |

Thanks for satisfying my curiosity. Had a very good afternoon on one, even my non-sailing wife enjoyed it. First time I've helmed a keelboat too, couldn't have wished for anything more well mannered. |

On another note - did you find Port Zelande a little strange? I was there with the EAORA (http://www.eaora.org) fleet for our dutch race week and we all found it a bit odd! |

As replies go, better late....... (I've been working a lot - in North Sea) Port Zelande did seem a little 'strange'. Can't quite say why, I just put it down to it being Dutch and there being very few British holidaying there, lots of Germans though. I did like the place though, 'Dutch' and 'little odd' seem to go together for me, in a nice way. Always found them to be a pleasant and friendly people when working with them in the past. Probably will go back in 2007 - the kids really want to as well.. |
