Our Topper has both sail sizes and I'd recommend the 4.2 sail rather than a reef, for a lighter helm.
If I believe your profile, Olly, you're 23, so your son is what.... 4 or 5? A Topper might be a handful for him for the moment, but the 4.2 sail will give him all the power he needs. I've sailed ours with both sails and the only noticeable difference is on the run - then again, I'm 9st! The smaller sail has a superb cut (from Sailing Solutions, I haven't sailed the Rooster sail) and is infinitely superior to a reefed sail (yep, even reefed properly).

I would say: go for the smaller sail, it's an investment in the future!

Agree. You need to be 9  to 11 stone for optimum weight in a breeze (F6) more like 10 1/2

Definately. Optimum weight I reckon is about  9.5 stone.  Rick- if you get down to 11 stone you'll struggle in a force 5 or less

I think I could get to 10.5 but I think I'll stick with beer and the Musto

if you have a leaky topper make sure you take out the bladers for the centerboard and put some filler in between the two skins. also put some filler were the gasket should be in the self bailer, as they seem to perish!! couple of tips.
