Can anyone remember what the Sigma 8 was called before it became the Sigma 8?  I don't know why but it's been doing my head in over the laast few days.

The Sigma 8 was sold under the name Sigma from Plymouth based Marine Projects. But the boat was from Slovenia and have been Known under the following names: Shipman 8m (In denmark), Sunbeam 8m (in Austria) and Seaway 8m (in Slovenia)

Thanks for that.  However I am sure it was sold in Britain before it became the Sigma 8, and that is the information that eludes me.

we called them slovenian 8m's

dunno if that was official but nick stratton was punting them at the time with that being  the verbal handel

I believe there is another name which relates to the circle of stars used on the boats mainsail prior to the sigma misnomer.

Nick Stratton works out of Rhu Marina, but they were sold before they were named Sigma 8's - I know as I sailed on one on the Clyde before they were known as Sigma 8's.

if its troubling youse why not ask Nick then

he can be e mailed through his website @ http://nickstrattonyachts.com

Nick used to lend me his first own boat and demonstrator Djinn something or other with a grey hull ,it was definately called a sigma 8, and probably the fastest ever built. it had an 8 surrounded by *********'s on sail , no sigma sign .

Bill Mc Kay I think was also involved at slovenia end , praps he brought an unbranded demo over at some point before Nick took on agency and distribution. Nick was a or even the Sigma distrubutor for uk , hence the reason why HE branded them Sigma 8's.

nope.

I raced against Nick and Miles at the time (c93 IFRC) and they only started calling them that after a couple of seasons, when they noticed the trademark wasn't owned by any existing company-

---much to David Thomas's annoyance by some verbal accounts, allegedly, not confirmed.

The later ones were really quite well built but there was a keel-cord issue with cavatation.....

Anyway, they did a better job with the Hydro, which we could do with a modern equivalent

I don't see why. He didn't own the brand, or even design all the boats e.g. Sigma/400 was Rob Humphreys.
