Why does the A rig not have its own PY number (like Aero, Laser etc.)? There must be enough data by now to work out the offset. When I was sailing exclusively in a B rig, the chap in an A rig never got close whatever the conditions. It made the A rig a bit pointless; better to keep the big rig up and deal with the conditions. I found exactly the same when I was in Lasers and it was permitted to sail a radial sometimes but signed on as a full rig - this just doesn't work!

It doesn't have a separate number because clubs don't report the boat as two separate classes.

half the battle with py is getting decent data from the clubs, which in turn need it from the sailors. if all the clubs had the same race entry system you might stand a chance, but again relies on the sailors themselves selecting the right rig.

Wasnt there a class rule with regards to the A and B rigs on the 300? They were never intended to be different classes along the lines of the Laser, Radial and 4.7.

Exactly so. It came out in the days when the performance equalisation fad was still in fashion. |

Then the majority of them realised they could handle the B and the A faded somewhat.

Plus you could reef the B rig. I don't know if you still can

Speaking as a short arsed 72Kg sailor I can report that upwind the B is completely manageable in breeze.
Downwind reaching can get tricky in waves, I just haven't got the mass/length to dangle over the back corner. I haven't mastered square running so couldn't comment. |
