Engine Remotes

   Does anyone else have problems with the remotes used for outboard engines?
At Lancing Sailing Club we spend a lot of money every year maintaining or replacing the remotes on our engines.
It got to the point where someone recommended that we do away with the centre consuls and go back to tiller steering. Fortunately from a safety and boat handling perspective this was thrown out.
It seems the remotes we use are made from aluminium and corrode even with regular greasing and maintenance.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

	As i am powerboat guru :) i can help you here. At first thought i would suggest tighter seals around the Gear Lever and Throttle Adjuster. Another alternative is to encase all wires etc in rubber tubing and sealing them with some sort of sealent such as bathroom sealent etc. That should sort your problems. Another alternative would be to wrap plastic bags around the remotes, looks a tad tacky but should keep them dry. Drop us an email if you still have probs. Cheers, Alex.

	The only real answer is more maintenance - thorough wash down with fresh water after EVERY use, followed by a good soak in WD40 to displace the water. If you can keep the internals completely packed full of grease that will help. You should probably spend 20mins after each use cleaning/greasing etc. If you can get the casing sealed well enough, you could drill it and tap it for a grease nipple which would make it easier to keep it topped up

	I wonder if it's the quality of the parts you're buying. Our Club rib must have a similar life to your boats and doesn't cause any problems, save for the odd cable adjustment in the year. We've only just made a console cover, but this is because the boat has a permanent radio fitted.
