2;`1 halyard

On my Phantom I currently have 1: 1 halyard but reducing compression is talked about as being a good thing in other classes. Is it a good idea to have some tension in the rig to promote it working when gusts hit etc? 
Mark who sails here has put a halyard lock at the top of his mast and says it has reduced the curve in the top section of his mast so less luff curve needed in the sail. 
What are peoples thoughts on this?

	As an observation, I have looked at halyard locks and 2:1 main halyards and concluded that the time that mast bend due to compression was least desirable was off wind. Since you let the cunningham off at the windward mark then presumably compression is not an issue, I have a halyard lock on the Yawl, but mainly because the halyard is external, so foreshortens when you have any mastbend. Though any attempt to reduce compression of a wooden mast has to be a good idea. The biggest issue with halyard locks is when they don't release while approaching a leeward slipway! I have always used 2:1 jib halyards though.

	Hi David I wont fit a halyard lock as when its windy SW I want to come in sensibly. Dont fancy my relatively new boat running full tilt up the beach at Lee! Edited by Gordon 1430 - 13 Apr 22 at 10:23am
