On this day in 1916 Ernest Shakleton and five of his friends set off from Elephant Island in a small life boat. His ship had been crushed in the ice and his men were starving on Elephant Island so he set off on a 1,300km sail to South Georgia with nothing more that the sun to navigate with. It took 16 days but they only saw the sun five times over that time. There was a real chance they would just sail past South Georgia but after 16 freezing days in the Southern Ocean in an open dinghy they literally sailed into South Georgia and had to climb up the huge mountains to get from the west side to where the people were on the east side. Yes I know its off topic, but its sailing and might help to put our present troubles in some perspective!

Sorry, I was just conflating Mutiny on the Bounty with Alive..... throwing in a bit of 'In The Heart of the Sea' into the mix.

Not forgetting Grace Darling, not long distance but worthy of mention.

Shackleton is one of my all times heroes. But the times were very different, whilst fighting to survive by living under an upturned boat in extreme weather, a partition was put up to create an " officers only" section.

Although- perhaps times are not so different now
