Hi I've had both hips replaced back in 2012-13, and have since sailed my OK and Solo, borrowed the club Laser (still don't like them!) and crewed my Hornet and others (trapezing), played hockey, cycled, all with no damage. My surgeon knew I did all those activities before the ops and when he did the second sign-off he just said go and have a full life again. I think I'm coming due for a knee soon which I think will have more restriction on movement.

I am 10 months post full replacement, had a couple of “ subluxation “ events ( partial dislocation of joint ) which put me back a bit. I have gone back to Pilates which has helped enormously as the instructor has tailored some of the exercises to improve my hip, cycling and walking is also good . My experience is that rotation exercises / movement of the hip takes longer to sort than the basic walking / cycling exercise where everything stays in line.  My concern is impact damage, I normally sail a Fireball and am worried about impact damage should I lose grip / get washed off of the gunwhale. It is not always easy to control the “ landing “after you have become the dope on the rope ! Going to give it a go in 2020 , light stuff first gradually building up.
