The single most expensive part I can find from any manufacturer is a mainfoil at £2600, but this includes both parts and it'd be pretty unusual to do both. Mast is £900 plus VAT, sails have got a bit silly at £2k. When Moth sailors talk about breakages most of the time it's stuff like ropes and running rigging - there is little redundancy on a Moth and if something like this fails it's generally race over and with the high loads on everything boatwork is key. Having arrived in Weymouth after a 25+ knot day of racing I was surprised how little repair work was going on. To be fair, your point is still valid - when the top 4 are pros with equipment deals what use is a voucher for a new wetsuit? Thankfully I know the winner donated his to his highly talented yet humble boatbuilder.

Interesting thread, it seems the OP is either misinformed about Moth sailing or deliberately using hyperbole.
- Prizes were vouchers not cash. Lots of similar prizes through the fleet: Eddie Bridle 1st Boat older than 5 years Brad Gibson Triers Trophy Sam Barker 1st Corinthian & Best 1st Nationals Ricky Tagg 1st Grand Master Fionn Conway 1st Under 21 Josie Gliddon Ladies Champion Simon Hiscocks 8th Overall Jason Belben 7th Overall Dave Kenefick 6th Overall Dan Ellis - 5th Overall Mike Lennon 1st Master & 4th Overall Benoit Marie - 3rd Overall Brad Funk 1st Jnr Master, 1st Overseas & 2nd Overall Dylan Fletcher - National Champion Other sponsor contributions provided free breakfast, post race beer & pasta, and socials, making a great event. Responding on some of the other points: - There are several very good boats available now at well under £30k. Good opportunity for talented sailors to buy & race in Gold Fleet at the 2020 Worlds in Weymouth! - You'd be hard pushed to do £5k of damage even on a bad day. I don't see many references to breakages in event reports, a quick look at reports on Y&Y website shows only one mention, a broken shroud. - The moth fleet are mainly insured through Noble, who are excellent. Noble have provided sponsorship for class events for years, so presumably they find the fleet to have a reasonable and sustainable claims record. - Yes, Brad does seem to have a nice life. Probably why he's a nice guy to have in the fleet. As Brad would (probably) say, enjoy the planet and your sailing. |
