IMO sailing will be gone from the games within 2 or 3 cycles; the cost to put the regatta on; venue, equipment, staffing, geographic footprint, promotion, ticketing, security.... versus the returns from actually staging it (versus other non-Olympic sports advertisers will be very arguably more interested in backing and cost much less to stage in smaller arenas.

RS can have a punt at getting their boat into the Olympic circus but it might well end up being 'careful what you wish for' .

For my 3p worth, if they do tilt at glory then the best approach would be to create a specific Olympic mens and womens mast+sail package to keep the club 5, 7 and 9 separate.  Economies of scale in all other areas will still work to everyone's advantage but club handicaps won't be hammered by 'ultras' winning events and Olympic regs can stay nice and tight on the supply package to avoid cheating without having to overly restrict or get club sailors into measurement etc.  No swapping mid regatta either!

but then you'd lose part of the key benefit the low level club laser sailor has got from the olympic status - the flow down of decent secondhand kit.

The brilliant thing about the Optimist is that it takes the kids from beginners to a very high and competitive level. Understanding the balance of any boat is key to getting it going fast surely it is good that kids understand this early on. Most entry Optimist are roto moulded (optibats etc) and don’t have rake adjustment

if we are talking about a Finn or a Star I’d take your point but really, has there been any “flow down” of decent secondhand kit to club L*ser sailors ? Unless there is a L*ser style debacle with hulls and foils from different factories being very <allegedly> different from each other (RS beware, beware), then I doubt this really makes any difference, certainly any more than I have ever been able to buy Usains old Nike’s or Sir Chris’ track bike cast offs.

That's a new definition of brilliant I am unfamiliar with. Having 16 year olds racing in Optimists is rather like having them race tricycles.
