Sub plus joining fee is less than most club's annual subs. Mine is around £230 at present and, AFAIK, even the cheapest clubs around here have subs that are well over £100.

Yup, 50 off a 50 inflated price every year is exactly the same as it was before. But instead of calling it an extra penalty fee for new members it's a discount for timely renewals. 

I don't think joining fees are a bad thing to help retain members and keep them paying subs on time. But they do come across as a penalty to entrants which isn't really the point.
