Its the final straight to Christmas so am looking for ways to avoid actually working! Whats a lowrider moth really like to sail? Have always thought that having one would be occasional fun rather than my boat to use each weekend to race in. Looks like a challenge but would be interested to hear from those that have sailed them what they are really like.
NB: I have zero interest in flying so please do not try and sell me foiling. Ta!

Its a bit of a piece of string question since lowrider Moth includes everything from a Europe through arguably the most difficult boats to sail ever constructed. If you have steer-for-balance dialed in its probably not too hard, but if you're still sailing the old school way luffing in gusts then you'll suffer.

True but I was assuming H2 was referring to a later design rather than something more 'normal'
![]() I sailed a very old Europe a couple of years ago, I'm top end of the weight range at 76kg but it was a delightful boat. Edited by Sam.Spoons - 17 Dec 18 at 9:21pm |

Sam - I’m currently on Op Deny Calories in order to get in my newly purchased Europe in the spring - I’ve wanted one since I was a skinny teen, but in recent years have been firmly in Finn territory.....
Interestingly, the 76kg you were (I don’t know when that was) is now by no means top-end in the Europe these days. 2014 World Champion was 84kg and 6th place was 80kg. I guess modern carbon sticks have widened the weight carrying envelope. The 2014 Champ, Lars, also won it in 2015 and was runner-up in ‘16, ‘17 and ‘18, so it wasn’t a one-off windy event. he was 2017 OK European Champ and also competes in the Finn😎 At a current 87kg and dropping (down from 97kg this summer) I can’t wait to get out in the little boat. For heaven’s sake, nobody tell Grumph about the Europe! 😜🤣 Europe Sailor Weights |

I loved my Europe, but discovered I leave my elbows in the air when gybing. Very painful lumps developed, and I never could remember to keep them down, so in the end swapped classes.

He already spotted it, learned more in one beat following a girl who really knew how to sail it whilst banging every shift than all the years previously buggering about on the sea. But Grumph's a Trapezing sailor now and his next mission is to learn how to foil having just landed the agency for kite and windsurfings leading foil maker..Moses. Onwards and Upwards. ![]() Edited by iGRF - 22 Dec 18 at 12:07pm |

Gary Hoyt wrote a great piece about gybing a Finn in his book ‘Going for Gold’.
