club training boat mast repair

   Hi All
We have a fairly old RS Vision which when changing the main halyard I noticed the spreader root had pulled out the mast leaving a couple of fairly decent size holes.
My thoughts on the fix were to obtain a section of mast (200mm) cut the back off and use it as an external sleave to cover the holes and then refit the spreader bracket onto the new section.
Reason for not claiming on the insurance is a combination of excess and value of the boat.
Does this sound like a sensible plan or am I cracking up.
Boat will be used for club training/ pleasure sailing or sold very cheap with full explanation of mast issue.

	Pretty sure the spreaders are on with 4.8mm rivets so could try going up to 6mm and just use the holes unless they're really bad could also just move the spreaders up or down fractionally if its a training boat it wont make huge amount of difference and fill the old holes with some decent size rivets I think trying to patch it with a new section of mast is probably over kill and could be a time consuming repair by the time you've sourced the bits and done it Edited by ClubRacer - 09 Oct 18 at 6:07pm

	Good advice if the holes are not too big and no cracks emanating. If there are any then Gordon's plan sounds like a good one. The club probably have a few old masts and volunteer labour..........

	dont forget if you do move the spreaders to put a patch on the sails to protect it where it now hits the spreaders

	That's a "tear at the perforations" failure waiting to happen then as you've probably guessed. Your plan seems the best option in that case.

	I must admit I'd be inclined to just move the spreader bracket and replace the spar if the cracks propagate. How much more life do you give the rest of the boat?

	Move spreader bracket and 200mm sleeve or 300mm sleeve and retain spreader position ?

	I'd sleeve it as even moving the spreaders will leave the enlarged holes which are always going to be a point of weakness.

	Hi Jim Its a training boat for the club but for some reason nobody likes the vision they prefer the Quests. It may get sold of cheap and if it does I shall make sure the mast repair is mentioned.
