Yes, but completely different business models. The builder of a Farr 3.7 has no R&D costs to recover, the market is made by the class association and they don't have to run the overheads of a big business and create and run a regatta schedule. With a Feva you are buying into a much more integrated package ....
I think yo have to compare the complete package not just the core product.... |

A mirror is over 6k, a cadet is well over 6k. Mirror no longer has RYA supported squad I believe.
A topper is 3.2k An optimist is 3.4k So basically, if you have two kids who want to race, and you want to buy a new boat, then a Feva is probably the cheapest option.

Yes but.. And I don't even know how it is we are talking comparisons between a roto moulded childs beach toy and a sophisticated carbon based race machine, the one has economies of scale is sold in volume, often grant assisted and I would guess has quite a low spec of roly bits and sticks on it whilst the other certainly in the case of mine is all carbon topside with decent blocks and hand fared foils.
Are they even in the same price range then? I had been considering trying my hand at flogging them on my website, but they are a little on the specialist side and I still haven't raced mine in 'normal' conditions yet so haven't quite worked up the enthusiasm for the challenge. |

Jack said they're a rip off because a Farr is only slightly more expensive.
But, the reality is, if you want a boat for two kids to race the feva is on the lower end of the price range. The problem with the cadet, mirror and oppy, is they were designed as something you could make at home for low cost (albeit a decent time expenditure). But once professional builders take over people always purchase on performance and quality. This is true for most open manufacturer classes and means they seldom end up being cheaper than a SMOD where the manufacture has a monopoly over that class. At the moment the Farr doesn't seem to have terribly many builders or a massively competitive racing circuit. If it does develop more builders and more racing, people will pay more for the faster boats and the price will go up. Edited by mozzy - 02 May 18 at 1:35pm |

All boats are expensive.
All boats depreciate and have finite economcial lives. But you don't need a brand new boat for oiks to bash around training. My Laser is alright for club racing, it cost me less than 1/3 of the brand new price. I'd guess there are Fevas out there which have done a year or three at the front of the fleet for about half price. There are probably cheaper options if you are able to put time into maintenance. |

If your kids don't get along, and having them stuck in 12ft of each other will result in the boat returning to shore with only one aboard, then you can just about get a pair of Tera new for the same price as a Feva depending how many options you tick. |
