Anyone got any ideas for how to break ties in a High Points Scored system - that is where the winning boat scores number of entries, second scores number of entries minus one and so on?

Rule A8.1 should work.  It's phrased to apply equally to high or low points systems.

That's what this says

Better to move to standard Appendix A Low Points.

If you must use High Points, make sure that your base figure N, is sufficiently bigger than the number of original entrants to accommodate additional entrants.

If 'winning boat scores number of entries' means 'number of entries in that race' (not number of series entries) then surely the comment about the base figure N is irrelevant.  In this case you could argue that on a tie-break 3 x 1st places in races with 2 entries are 'worth' less than 3 x 1st places in races with 20 entries - I'm guessing this is what Matt is getting at?  I would suggest when breaking the tie with the number of 1st/2nd/3rd places you tot up the points earned for 1st places and compare those - if they are still tied then tot up points gained for 2nd places etc.
