Teaching to Sail

(Sorry, not really a Beginner Question, but couldn't find a more suitable forum)
Those of you who are teaching beginners (I assume there must be some DIs/SIs on here): when you are running sailing courses (eg RYA Adult Levels 1 - 3), how do you schedule them?

1. One weekend, two consecutive days, per level
2. One day (either Sat/Sun) on two consecutive weekends
3. Multiple sessions (over the course of several weeks, either weekend or weekday evenings)
4. all of the above
5. Something else

We are currently mainly following option 1, but it puts a lot of strain on our (volunteer) instructors who basically give up a whole weekend at a time. The argument is that trainees learn better, and there is less time lost with getting changed and rigging/de-rigging the training boats as there would be with option 3. I'm thinking of moving to options 2 and 3; my feeling is that people learn things better if they are spread out over a longer time.

What are your views/your experience from your own training centres? Please don't use this thread to rant about the suitability of the RYA training method...

	We do your option 2 but on staggered weekends for the RYA Dinghy Level 1 & 2 courses and I just did RYA Powerboat 2 again over two staggered weekends and found this was fine for all For the Power boat 2 course you also need 2 safety boats if its also a sailing day and this keeps everyone happy, one for training one for sailing safety cover One other thing is advise all trainees its a 'prompt' 09.00 start so no delays ! 	We teach adults by running weekend courses, but pay our instructors. Our juniors we teach as a group, meeting once or twice a month, taught by volunteer SI, DIs and AIs, mostly parents themselves.

	My club also uses a professional SI to run RYA sailing courses, he works in conjunction with clubs DI's. Membership take up running at about 50% Edited by 423zero - 26 Nov 17 at 11:05am
