It seems madness to people who use their boats 50 + races a year, but there are quite a lot of people out there who will for example pay £5k for  a pushbike and only use it a few times a year.
It's a marketing problem aka 'opportunity'?

And those people are cycling around a branded bike (with associated global brand advertising strategy) that says I've got enough money to buy this and it makes me look cool. They are not cycling around something made from bit's of a Porter Loo. In fact, it's the very fact that is cost a tone of cash that they bought it.

There aren't too many youngsters doing it at Hayling.

It looks like a lot of ageing windsurfers take it up cos it's less physical.

It's not, it's road biking and yes I do, about a *hundred million by now, shame I spent a hundred and one million of it on toys and daughters.

That sir, on one's humble opinion, is marketing. 

Selling is getting someone to part with £120 for a shirt when they turn up and ask what is different about yours (the £120 one) from the £30 they normally spend.
