A and B are approaching the leeward mark on a broad reach. A is ahead of and to leeward of B. B establishes a minimal overlap on A at three boat lengths but slows and the overlap is broken (agreed 18.2.c.1 still applies.)
If A is far enough ahead to round the mark "normally" without impeding B's own normal seamanlike rounding, can she do so, or does she have to sail wide round the mark leaving what is in effect an empty lane inside her for B to full moments later when she arrives? |

As is so often the case go to the definitions...
Mark-Room Room for a boat to leave a mark on the required side. Also, (a) room to sail to the mark when her proper course is to sail close to it, and (b) room to round the mark as necessary to sail the course. So there's nothing in the definition that says how you have to give room, and if a faster boat gives the room by being clear ahead then I believe that's ok. But if you slow during the rounding you could be in deep trouble. |
