Rather sadly - yes, effectively it appears to be dead
No Opens, Mickey Mouse Nationals etc It looked like a great way for the larger sailor to get a Laser out again at far less cost than a Phantom, Finn etc. It was quite alight wind weapon. However - it just doesn't really work because mini sized Laser sailors might use it in light winds only (when it can be very rapid) and go back to smaller rigs in any breeze., The larger sailor is therefore beaten by the lightweights using the 8.1 in the light and then struggles against most other classes (including the smaller rigged Lasers) in the breeze (it was rubbish in any real breeze). So they bought boats designed for bigger sailors that take weight better. If Rooster or a class association had put a minimum weight on the helm or even held the odd event at a location where they might actually get some breeze (to date the 'events' have been on the Thames or a puddle inland) it could have worked ? You see the odd one here and there at inland club handicap races but that's about it. Shame |

I sailed one twice when 'between boats' and it wasn't windy enough to windsurf.... ironically I thought it was quite a good ride actually.
And the hull I was using was a 4 digit wooden tiller sh*tter.... it was so poor and decrepit I actually auctioned it for charity rather than sold it conventionally. So to come away and think it had merit was, believe me, a revelation! I reckon with a half decent hull, and maybe a custom rudder to address the weather helm, then there's a decent boat hiding in that set-up for the 90kg+ guy looking for a club chariot.... and for a lot less wonga than a Phantom, Fig or the Aero 9.

Looking at the title, I was hoping to see pictures of a really overpowered Laser, and then one with the mast pot ripped out.

Pretty much what i though , still keeps price of rig down , got a chance of ole laser and bought a cheap rig , keeping it for winter series at our club , as havent queiet managed to get cat out , wind chill in a cat in scottish winter a tad unispiring .
Shame lightweights have spoiled a heavyweights setup , guess thats where hcap comes from , i doubt with my bulk ill be any quicker than a radial , but i dont really care , Seems ironic the steve cockrill developed the rig for heavy weights then raced it himself and hes no giant ;) . |

The reason I'm always against rig swapping, it always seems to disadvantage heavier sailors. The Phantom and Finn work for big guys cause lightweights get overpowered too quickly, therefore keeping us heavies competitive in them. Having said that I'm hearing of some quite light sailors in Phantoms ie <80kgs. |

sounds like all L*sers to me in anything over a 'stiff breeze' given the utterly abysmal rudders they have and rudimentary spars and sail controls |

Maybe a plastic classic finn is a better option at club level - just need to get the right handicap if using a tin rig...

I dunno, with the ability to move down to a 4.7 in a breeze for an unfit short person like me, and a 9 sq m rig for when all sensible people are mowing the lawn, it would certainly have the wind range. Even the Rooster rig would be OK, as has been discussed, but to me, it doesn't look quite right. In fact, none of the sails do, which is why I have a different boats. |
