A question comes to mind from seeing images from racing in big winds this weekend.
What changes do people think have been come about from the introduction of better sailing clothing? I am thinking both in terms of boat design the behaviour of sailors. I remember a mate of mine telling me about his dad who used to sail Ospreys in the 60s at sea wearing a wool sweater and oilies. He simply never capsized from one season to the next.

two handed, Dry suit and trainers, sail in all conditions, have sailed in sub-zero temperatures, ropes have frozen.
Single hander, Wet suit and boots, again all conditions. I have given the question some thought, I would not consider sailing in a sweater and oilies, in most of the conditions we have had since they have been naming Storms.

With less personal jeopardy are we breaking gear and swimming more often?
Are we any less seamanlike or simply operating to the same standard of risk awareness given the better safety equipment we have?

Wetsuits have been around a very long time.
Since the growth of things like 505 & Fireballs in the 50s and 60's? Maybe people are softer though, too used to central heating etc? Offshore gear must have changed the way people sail to some extent? |
