E.g. And confirmation received:
a) not an oversight.
b) yes, they are legal.

I'm really surprised by that! I can see plenty of occasions on longer races where it's possible that the autopilot is faster than your 2nd or 3rd string helm. Especially at night trying to keep the right TWA.

Top end autopilots (with gyros) a. la the class 40's can perform better than your average Corinthian helmsman at night definitely. Its a bit easier for the humans when they can see the waves coming.

It's inevitable that one day, in the not very distant future, an autopilot will be better than the best human helm.

But like Open 60s, they're boats that are expressly designed to spend a lot of time under pilot - esp wrt thing like balance.

Unlikely - or at least a lot of work will have to be done on wave and pressure anticipation systems. Some sort of camera, I suppose. Not cheap to develop.

I'm pretty sure that the autohelm we have (off the peg Raymarine with a gyro) would be a hell of a lot better than most amateur helms at 3am with the kite up in a bit too much wind after a tough, tiring, beat.  Certainly in the not crashing stakes, if not the catching every wave stakes.
