How our great great grandfathers did it...

   From the minutes of the Canoe Club, 1867, in the section "Canoe Cruises". These journeys were undertaken in essentially unballasted boats around 16ft like this one:

Gordon - Sailed, close hauled, across the English Channel at night. Down the Reuss, and from Lucerne to the Rhine. Down the Soane to Lyons, and by the Rhone to the Mediterranean. Sailed to Marseilles. Then from Nice to Genoa. To the Italian Lakes. Overland to Lucerne and thence by Reuss and Rhine homeward.

McGregor - Norway, Swden and Baltic etc

Poole - Coasted from Liverpool to Glasgow: crossing Solway from Whitehaven to Kirkcudbright.

Tyas - Coasted from Sheerness to Folkestone

Bowker - Across the English channel from the French side. Also from Littlehampton to Dungeness

Kinnaird, Balfour, McLeod - half round Skye, and over to Rum, and upon Loch Corruisk

Well, not my grandfathers, who would have been working while the aristocrats were out cruising... 

Effectively I suppose these are the same sorts of people who nowadays sit drinking in big motor yachts... But never mind the social comment, the trips are impressive .

	Jim have you read Sopranino by Colin Mudie,a different era but he tells of a boat based on a canoe and crossing the channel in it before going on to tell how they designed a light weight ocean going small boat.The pre war ocean racers being all long keel and very heavy.
