Is it true that in a year or so the rs600 will have an optional hydrofoil pack. As i am going to buy one and was wondering if this is true??

Peter Greenhaugh and Alister Richardson managed it with a 49er, and there are a few 14s in the Southern Hemisphere doing it, as well as a green Swiss 14.

It definantly flys and by gawd it looks mad!!
Word is that development might be finalised by january and it will be sold either as a full convertion or possibly a kit. From what ive heard the modifications nessacery are by no-means endorsed by the class at the moment but negotiations are underway about possible combined opens. Like the IC/AC perhaps? Linton Jenkins of Fullforce boats is the person to speak too but I suspect he is probibly being bombarded by inquirys at the moment!! There was a laptop with footage of it in action when we were at Draycote a few weekends back... Looks barely managable but great fun (I think it was Sam Pascoe on the stick so a fair bit of foiling experiance but still looked pretty damn damp!). Max points for the perfect teabag/pirouette performed from the wire. Bonus points to whoever selected the soundtrack (choooooonnn!!) |

i've seen a pic of a 600 foiling and it did look a bit sketchy but it would be pretty cool to get it foiling, thinking of maybe getting a 600 or contender in the next year and if it was foiling i would probabley be more inclined to it than the contender but personallly i think its looks a bit sketchy and would get to practise my swimming technique quite a bit i think in a 600 regardless of whether its foiling.

Foiling RS600's will work. I have seen vids with the helm only having a small amount of practice, with a year or two it should work. the advantage over the RS600 over the moth is when you crash down onto the water the 600 still has stability when stationary opposed to the moth which doesn't. With the right technique it will work!

There have been discussions about this within the class, and the current opinion is that although it would be an absolute blast to sail, if we were to fully adopt the foils then it would kill the class.
The likelyhood is that they would be available as a kit, to strap on as a fun accessory, and we may have one open per year for foilers, but it is unlikely to replace the regular boat. |

It's only an idea at the moment, I can't see LDC selling the kits for less than £1500, which is more than some people have paid for the boat.
Personally I don't think it will happen, if you look at the typical 600 sailor it's either a skint student or an 800/49er sailor with a second boat. Neither is likely to spend that sort of money on something you can't even race. Plus the foiling 600 has been heavily modified, so it's not as easy as just slotting a different centreboard in. Don't get me wrong, I'd love a go in one, I just don't see the foiling version replacing the standard boat. |

The foiling 600 footage was awesome, however remember that it was just on standard Moth foils, so I guess with larger foils it might be a bit more manageable. It certainly just killed the "oooo perhaps one day a foiling moth" department of my brain, reckon for me a 600 would be a far better bet, and probably cheaper too! (and would not need to lose a few pounds...!!) |
