As with Diving knives IMHO - folk buy them as another accessory to buy, then cut their fingers or get laughed at and leave them in the bag (where my scuba knife now lives  LOL ).  

Been sailing trapeze boats for 15 years now, never got trapped in a way that a knife would help.  Been diving for 20 .. likewise.  But it used to feel cool having a blade strapped to my thigh ... that and all that black rubber!

Maybe makes more sense if you sail cats or boats with big netted racks (18ft spliffs and B14s).

best place for a knife is in the (two) hands of the safety boat crew, never had to use one on a dinghy thankfully and on a lead-mine, it was by the companionway hatch, not sure you'd ever have it in the right pocket etc.. carrying one personally

Yes.  I was thinking a better question may have been 'have you ever had to use a knife'.
