Well I much prefer the EPS over the Blaze, even though probably the Blaze is the easier sail (except off wind in waves). I much prefer it's balance, I like not having stays all the way up and the rig being able to go clew first. I like the more comfortable seat, (those bars as low cost and as efficient as they are in capsize scenario are devilish uncomfy and I will not wear bondage lederhosen just to go sailing thanks.

It's not as fast as the Blaze which means one of them has the wrong handicap, but it is speedier to tack, feels more edgy in lighter winds (I found the Blaze felt a bit dead until it had a good 8 -12 knots under it)and rewards a bit more input than I'm normally prepared to give with instant speed increase, unlike the RS100 which didn't give noticeably that much more for increased effort.

The Lake isn't the best place for it, legend tells of a Blaze doing well once upon a time down there and Peaky and I proved at the FOM whoever was in the Blaze won, so will I ever again, not sure I'll certainly look at an Echo should one ever see the light of day, but for now I'm just about to renew my Insurance (that's a first for a single hander)for another year until I can work out how to build the V3 or put the V2 on foils, so much to do, so little time.

I'm not surprised that sometimes the phantom struggles in waves as it was designed for river sailing originally.

and I don't blame Jim for wearing round. that was about a force 5-6 and sometimes a conservative approach pays dividends.

A bit off topic in light of the thread's title, but I have to say the Phantom is a very well-mannered boat downwind. I sailed one for the first time at the Shoreham Nationals this year in nothing less than a force 4-5 and massive waves. Very controllable (except in turning corners where the boom's very close to the water).

I can remember newspaper sellers in south Wales shouting "Echo", of an evening - just occasionally it would time right so you could hear 2 of them, one just after the other and further away...

This has nothing to do with any boat called an Echo, which I notice is not quite an anagram of Halo...

Ah yes, the Echo....

isn't that what you hear when you stand on your soapbox outside Cirrus Towers with a megaphone droning on about spinnakered hiking singlehanders?

... it's the sound of your own voice coming back at you.  It's reassuring for some, and they seem to like it.  For others it can be quite haunting.  Embarrassed

Sure it was quick enough in light wind, but the RS300 was quicker and nicer in every possible way.

Blimey, you really didn't get on with a Phantom. To be honest I can see that if you started in the wrong conditions/ frame of mind you might get into this position. It can be hard work upwind and it is only as I got fitter and understood how much rig rake de powers the rig that I really appreciated it in stronger conditions.

Having owned a Solo and sailed an RS300 my view would be the exact opposite to yours. Some of it for exactly the same reasons in reverse, some of it for different reasons - as you say it is personal. BTW my experience is that the 300 is only just quicker overall (in line with handicap I would say). In some conditions, points of sail it is slower.

It is a curious thing that people can come to such different conclusions. Is it related to our physique/fitness or practical things like comfort or more intangible things like feel? Probably a bit of all.

Must be the weather 'closing in' !    Turn your back for 5 minutes and the the thread has turned ito a sl*gging match .   'Your boat is so c**p, my one is so cool' (yawn - we've done this line to death over the years surely)   I've been caught in Saturday night pubs with footbal crowds who, even after a few down their necks, are less partisan than some contributions !

I think I've sailed just about every boat 'introduced' here today.  They all have good features but they are also all very different.  Different does not mean 'wrong' .. just different.   If you like a particular set of characteristics .. well sail the boat that meets them best for you and where you sail.  If any particular boat does not meet your specification or requirements -  then no problem surely ?  Whats wrong in recognising the choices of others as equally valid as well ?    People are even more varied than any range of dinghy classes after all.

The Halo rig is not aimed at maybe 90% of you (and I include 'me') .. it is one for the heavies who have a much more limited choice than the other 90% of us ....  and some will try and some will buy.  In the end it is really that simple...
