Edit: there were only 3 challengers from the rest of the world, so sponsorship for a 2nd US club was bound to be tricky. Down to costs again probably.

Traditionally, there were defender trials - here is a quote about the 1983 cup

"Williams explained that Defender was built for the late Tom Blackaller’s 1983 America’s Cup effort but never made it past the Defender Trials, as Dennis Conner’s Liberty proved indomitable…"

With all the stuff on google about this time round, it is difficult to dig out any history of defender trials, at least whilst at work.

I doubt it can be made to pay by advertising.
F1 is on many times every year and attracts a huge repeat audience.
I enjoyed watching some AC, but I didn't arrange my week around it the way people do for F1.
The first couple of races I watched were somehow better than the later ones.
I think it will quickly get repetative.
Same as the Olympics, I enjoyed watching around 8 or 10 races, but felt I'd seen enough come the end.
Most people will have forgotten the  minor sponsors within a month.
Skiffs doing 20 knots are more exciting IMHO.

I do wonder whether the technology if it had existed for the early professional circuits, like the Ultra 30's, would have made them more successful? Will the X40's be using it now?

Yes, I think you are right. I definitely remember there being more than one 'home' team.
What could possibly go wrong?

More recently than that didn't America Cubed and Stars & Stripes have a defender series?
