the wire halyard on my carbon contender mast keeps slipping down the side of the sheave becoming so trapped it's impossible to move it. Yesterday I replaced the plastic sheavew with a new one but the same thing happened straight away. I have a metal sheave, is that the answer? The masthead fitting itself is plastic. Should I give up and switch to a rope halyard instead? If so I will have to fit a cleat and the rack for the wire will be in the way.
What is the answer? |

Sound like the slot in the fitting is too wide? Or the sheave is too narrow? (OK that's probably bleedin' obvious!). It's a problem I've never had on both a metal and carbon mast with a wire halyard. How hard would it be to replace the whole fitting? Pretty easy I remember on a metal one, but no experience on a carbon stick. A rope halyard might help a little, but only if you use a diameter larger than the wire - then again it might just jam too!.

the sheave is the right size, but the halyard wire is really thin. Maybe I should change that first?

Try using a bolt rather than a pin as this could provide more support to the sides of the sheave stopping them from deforming and allowing the wire to go down the side. You could even add some penny washers......
