Hi

I have recently bought my first dinghy a Wayfarer Mk2 SD 1986 and it needs a little cleaning up before we can sail

One of the main things I need is a new set of ropes as some are missing or damaged etc

I'm not really sure what I'm ordering as far as size or length

is there a company that produces complete ropes sets for a boat "off the shelf"?

I know I need a new Main (its transom rigged), Sheet, kicker rope but not sure what else is missing

also new toe straps too wile I'm changing things

Any help appreciated

Many thanks

Sam

If you cannot measure the old ropes, it is worth looking for a Wayfarer forum where people may respond to your question.

I expect the big online chandleries will be happy to quote you for a full set of ropes; most of them ought to know the sizes for a modern racing Wayfarer (though your older model might well have a simpler/shorter kicking strap arrangement).

I can't imagine anyone being able to do a "set of ropes" for a wayfarer. They must surely all be different. I confess I always end up guessing and buying them too long (plenty of offcuts for odd jobs) but it occurs to me that the sensible thing to do would be to get a ball of string, rig each one up with string and measure the length...

You could put everything together as best as you can and then take a photo and post on here. I'm sure everyone would help with the type of rope necessary for each bit

you can buy rope packs for some boats, especially one designs, but my experience is that they are always just a bit too short for my needs.  Better to find an expert and ask.
the same, but different...

FWIW, buy what you think you'll need plus a metre or two, rope isn't that expensive in the grand scheme of dinghy things and you're unlikely to replace them more than once every 5 or so years unless you sail every single week, hard, and most likely in salt water!  The off cuts come in very handy and if you're splicing, and starting out, you'll need some 'contingency', or at least I did and most people I know too!

- pre-cut rope packs are almost always more expensive, in my experience
- taking your removable lines off every now and then and/or hosing them down with fresh water really improves their longevity and how nice they are to handle
