I was a bit confused by the ruling on this crash:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=gypb4MLKNsI

Ignoring the rule 14 (avoiding contact) aspect why did the umpires say that rule 18 (mark room) applied when 18.1(b) would appear to say that it didnt apply? Am I missing something here?

Thanks

The event has its own set of rules, which I believe go along the lines of, whoever gets into circle first has all the rights, irrespective of port / starboard and the fact that it was a windward mark.

I gather the reason that the italian (bruni?) wasn't penalised for not doing enough to avoid the collision was due to his monohull experience causing him try to avoid the collision by spinning up into a tack just before impact. But as the ac 45s turn slower it looked like he wasn't doing much

You must be joking? I might try that one next time I race "sorry about that, I don't have much experience in this class, can you let me off?"
Needs to sail more...
