Easily the best sailing watch I have ever owned.  Good buttons, squeaks the last 10 seconds of countdown, easy to read, cheap and the battery lasts and lasts.  No problem with the waterproofing either.

I'll second that, great bit of kit. Cheap as chips and does the job better than many of the more expensive options on the market.

Yes I have that problem. One of the reasons for a crew.

Anybody no a way to stop an Optimum that is stuck in countdown repeat so every minute its beep beeping etc, apart from a hammer.
At the moment it is stuck down the garden as it would drive me nuts.
I will take the battery out later

If its less than a year old, phone them up and get a replacement, they are very good with that.  Beyond that, hammer and new one ;)

Another vote for the Casio from me, my only issue is that (3rd one now) I still haven't bothered learning how to program the tide thingy....

I wouldn't worry too much about that. Its tide function is very simplistic. It assumes low tide is exactly midway between the two high tides which is rarely the case.
Best wishes from deep in the woods

Not strictly budget at £60, but unlike cheaper optimum times has a proper metal screwcase back and better button waterproofing. Best thing about it is big clear letters for those who now need reading glasses and loud enough beeps. Also pins are not telescopic, but screwed in, so much stronger.

Casio a good option, but straps now thinner and cheaper than mine and the strap lugs go eventually.

I still use my Timex second hand - find it far easier to estimate how long to go with an angle than a count down.

I second the second hand plan; no buttons to press, a quick glance is all you need and easier to read without glasses.

I often just use the seconds counting up on my ordinary splashproof casio.
It's not so good when I crewing though.
As a helm I can judge 'we go at 12:05:17 and its now 12:04:40' a lot easier than I can call it to a helm if I'm crewing.
For multirace events I often sync my watch to the first gun. It's a good backup if the crew makes an error.
If you want to save money, don't spend anything on a watch (or maybe £7 at Argos) until you've saved up for a TackTick. The tacktick is good as a timer, but my crew is often between me and it pre start, and I like to use it to check line bias changiing.
