The day I venture into a clinker built hull with a sail on it you may have me sectioned.

The Blaze doesn't suffer from the extended rack thing because of the inherent stability of the the hull, but those racks and like on Peakys Blaze the lack of net stuff up near the front make for a very uncomfortable sail, despite this I guess it still is the best of a bad lot, I did wonder what my v-twin racks on a Blaze would be like they are/were quite comfy.

Still it's not to be, forward is the only direction and the Blaze still has those other faults dealing with waves with only light folk at the back of the bus

Flare in front of the mast is only really useful for keeping some spray out, which is pretty much irrelevant on a self draining boat. Any extra buoyancy isn't of value on a fast boat, because it makes it more likely to pitchpole rather than less: the boat just trips over the extra resistance it causes.

Funny the similarity, isnt it?! Flare fwd is prone to slow the boat down as the spray hits it, hence why 14s have very vertical topsides.

Yup I'll be there next weekend, looking forward to it.

Seems to work well on a 5-oh, but there is a lack of un-flared but otherwise similar boats to compare it to. I thinking of lumpy green water rather than 'spray'.
I used to sail an old 505 in conditions where I don't think I'd have coped in much else, not having much sea experience at the time.

Hi Greame

Blaze tramps ?   They are not 'controlled' by the class rules and you can do whatever you like or pander to your own pet theory - if you care to you can have none at all at one extreme or fully fill or net in the whole area between hull and wing tubes.    'Newbies' tend to want 'wall to wall' but as they gain confidence and need to feel less of the 'security blanket' they go more minimal - not all of them but then who is counting ?!

So you can  do your own thing - I would have thought that would appeal to your anarchist approach  LOL .... but maybe if you had come to any Blaze meetings, or joined the CA  you would have seen how much rule freedom really is permitted - Any tramps or none, any sheeting method, any toestrap system and you can change and modify controls within wide limits.

You can still be at the Burghfield Blaze weekend (6/7th April) if you want ....  we can find a loan boat I'm sure.  You know you want to  really.  If you do the CA will organise a round of your rumoured favorite tipple of Brandy and Babysham in your honour  (They have tried just about everything else and we are organising another 'pub night' on the Saturday - walking distance as well)

Vertical topsides, small flare fwd of the mast, big flare/wings for sitting/trapezing on.
Fast, but needs to be sailed very flat.

Quite apart from the practicalities there's the aesthetics too.  I've only ever sailed one once (and that was a very long time ago!) but I've always considered the 505 hull to be one of the most elegant to be found in a dinghy park.
I'm not arguing. I'm explaining why I'm right.
