Is that right?  So of the 60odd people who have like our club's Facebook page the posts will only appear in 16% of their newsfeeds unless I pay for it?  And yet I'm still bombarded by sh*t from other pages I like almost constantly.  I guess they're paying for it.

Facebook is really starting to get up my nose.
Successfully confusing ambition with ability since 1980.

If you've got nothing to say - say it on Facebook.
If you've got nothing nice to say - say it on Twitter.

Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

I think it's more that it might appear in everyone's newsfeed; it's just that what with with the bombardmentof other stuff they may not see it. Paying to promiote means it'll float up to the top of the newsfeed regardless of when it was posted.

Any page's post will reach around 16% of fans - this is partly missing stuff and partly Facebook's commercialisation, which was pretty inevitable. More at www.facebook.com/notes/facebook-marketing/sponsor-your-page-posts/10150675727637217

Who is your target audience?  The competitors?  Fellow 18 sailors who can't be there?  Us lot of fellow sailors here in the UK and abroad?

If it's for the competitors directly, then I think you are probably going to have to accept Facebook as a viable alternative to a championship microsite.  It's quick, easy, can host documents and freely available to the world for linking to other content.... but be smart, send your reports to Y&Y and then provide the links from Facebook back to Y&Y rather than duplicate the content... especially if it's also going on the class news pages too.

As for Twitter... really does anyone use it?  I find it the most annoying web experience going... bar trying to find a relevant telephone number for reporting broadband faults on the BT site by using a smart phone and a GPRS connection.

Personally I would stick with Y&Y and your class association website for the broadest possible audience.  Y&Y for the general sailing community your CA for fellow cat sailors not at the event.

Those of us who aren't signed up to sadbook most likely won't go anywhere near it, and even if one does, if you aren't a facebook user the delivery just looks like disorganised c*** , and much of what's on there won't work anyway which further adds to the irritation. So, no I don't see its a viable alternative unless you are happy to lose a chunk of audience.

Surely the simplest method is a mailing list. Just put up a subscribe to list item on your CA web site and take it from there.
Best wishes from deep in the woods

Justin Bieber does.

Yottie & Bike journo's do.

Politico's Do.

So basically the simple minded.

I don't think anyone pays it any attention unless there is some parallel real world activity going on, I never did get it, then I'm far to verbose for 170 characters or woteva u r sposed 2 use.

Well irritating as it is (and yes, facebook is irritating on many levels... timeline, news feeds, privacy settings etc) our sailing club 'group' has effectively wiped out the club forum which was formerly the only interactive content on our club website.  (It didn't help that a decision was taken to hide it behind a login page, now few people go to the effort to login just to read content, so they don't end up contributing, thus spiralling the forum down the plug hole with lack of usage.)  So I would say Facebook is now the primary general online interactive communications channel, although each fleet does (sort of) maintain email lists for fleet specific news and discussion.

Now sailracer has upgraded its servers it doesn't seem to have the issues it once did for hanging mid-sign up.  Personally I'd host the event management on there, using Facebook as communication hub to various stakeholders if I didn't want to invest in an event microsite.  Anyone who's not signed up on facebook can then follow links in emails etc direct to Sailracer.

In my opinion, Facebook serves a purpose to a point. I'm personally getting fed up with the newsfeed streams being packed full on nonense postings, out of date 'funnies' and pictures of peoples babies/dogs/cats. However, an event or class mircosite is a useful focal point. I also use them for my rugby teams and they are easier and more fluid than mailing lists or a website.

I'm a fan of twitter - I'm too old to be following Bieber or any other celeb, but its a really useful tool to get updates and information. I use it at work to get live industry updates, follow conference findings etc. It enables me to get a quick headline and then dig deeper if I want.

Sports feeds are very good (depending on who you follow). Alex Thomson Racing was very active during the Vendee and gave great insight, photos, blogs, video etc when he had power! Likewise the Americas Cup feed has made best use of this platform, particulary when the AC45 series was first running.

I guess this little experiment is to see how it can be used to engage class membership and other interested people in the cat sailor / sailing community. Could perhaps be used on a wider scale to provide updates across the calendar rather than this one event or maybe that is duplicating the class twitter feed?

The updates will definitely be sent to Y&Y with facebook links to avoid duplication.

I hear that the class is getting lots of enquiries at the minute and interest. For an old class of cat, its extremely active and has a great fleet following. I think it would be good to capture interest via as many routes as possible, without causing too much media burden.
