Slightly unusual request here from a Hastings Artist who needs some folk who know their way around a boat. I would guess they would also need to have an interest (although no previous experience required) in performing arts/mime/dance. The Artist in question seemed to think dinghy/yacht sailors young or old would be ideal. Knowing how to move on a boat is the key element....here is the message
Hello, I am an artist who was recently commissioned to make a film for the Jerwood in Hastings for this coming April. I am looking for sailors, fishermen and woman, ferry workers, anyone with some experience of being at sea, onboard a vessel, who understands the workings of a boat to some degree to possibly volunteer to help me out in a performance. In short, I will be needing people to perform in the motion of a boat out at sea. We will be working with a choreographer, but I stress that it will be very tame movements. There will be rehearsals which will both lead on to a live performance and a film. If you feel this could be of interest please do not hesitate to get in touch, or if you atleast know of other's who could be intrigued please let them know too. I am more than happy to explain the project more. As some of you may be aware, Jerwood is a brand spanking new prestigious art gallery that has been opened in the heart of Hastings Old Town, 1066 an' all that. And what a beautiful place the Old Town is: Ancient half timbered houses nestled between the cliffs of an east and west hill, Bill the conk's Castle perched atop. Net huts, fishing fleet and some fantastic pubs all within staggering distance. Chips, Seagulls, fish and the occasional fart of a fisherman's wife wafting gently on the breeze.......fantastic So if any sailors with an artistic bent in Sussex, Kent or anywhere (GRF is already pencilled in ![]() Edited by transient - 12 Feb 13 at 8:00am |

Rotten 'ell, that sounds like a game and a half. I may know how to move round a boat at sea, but I have absolutely not the slightest clue how I would simulate that movement on a static surface.

I guess the sailors will provide the knowledge of correct movements, the choreographer and artist will direct for artistic interpretation. The more I think about this, the more I'd like to see the finished product. The range and variety of movements on a sailing dinghy are incredibly complex compared with other types of boating. There is a rhythm of movements also which could quite easily be interpreted as dance, particularly in 2 handers.......it could potentially be very interesting. ......I can't do it myself as I have a bad back ![]() .....it also brings dinghy sailing to a wider audience. definitely sounds good... they need to give an artistic interpretation of a 470 crew shagging the wire, or maybe Big Ben giving Rita a fistful of downwind luvin'....

Of course, from a lesser know work...
"The trial of St. Pancake and the Teflontonians" I think they're performing it tonight, although tickets are flippin' expensive and the critics panned it.
