Amazing, same rations, same kit, only modern equipment is a vhf radio for emergencies. Two guys with trenchfoot after the voyage, now got to climb over the mountains to the old whaling station. Great tribute to a great man. If you havent read the account of Shackletons rescue of his own men its a fantastic read.... and he didnt lose a single man.

Feel a bit guilty posting here after the Fireball sails thread. The greatest small boat journey repeated.
Awesome.

Brief account of Antarctic History 1901 Shackleton was in the
expedition to the Antarctic led by Scott before Shackleton had to return home
ill. Scott left Cardiff for the
South Pole in 1910 then failed to make it back by just 20 km in 1912. If his
subordinates had followed his written orders he probably would have survived. 1915 Shackleton’s ship the
Endurance, was crushed by ice, the crew all made it to Elephant Island. He and
5 others went for help; they spent 2 weeks in a boat crossing 1300 km of ocean
to South Georgia before trekking to a whaling station. All his men survived as rogerd has pointed out. These contemporaries
were incredibly tough Brits who were out toughed by a bunch of Norwegians led
by Amundsen who got to the Pole first. It is a bit embarrassing to note that this forum is
populated by healthy adults who complain about having cold hands on a regular
basis. “Awesome” is an excellent word to describe it, I am in
awe of both the historical and their modern day counterparts. Sargesail’s current
quest for frostbite baffles me, but then it doesn’t take much. |
