Hello,

I live in Belgium, and i'm very interested in buying a Spitfire.

What are the pro's and cons of a Spitfire?

Is it true that it's faster then a F18?

It's not faster than a F18;

If you've been tod that it is, you might be thinking of the F16 which is on a Par with the F18 using the Texel Handicap.

The spitfire is "grandfathered" into the F16 class but does have a slower handicap on the SCHRS and Texel systems.

If you're thinking of buying a Spitfire because you've been told it's faster than an F18 - don't. Buy a Spitfire because you want a Spitfire. That holds true for any boat. Work out what you want from a boat, then look to see what will match your wants and is in your price range.

Spitfire pros: Established class (particularly in UK) - good class racing. Reputable manufacturer. Exciting boat to sail. Very manouvreable. Has a good handicap rating.

Spitfire cons: Quite expensive when compared to an F16. Quite heavy when compared to an F16. Difficult to sail solo (unlike an F16). More difficult to right from a capsize than an F16.

BTW I'm rather pro F16!!!!

Yes F16 do look good,  but i'm rather pro Spitfire!!!      A Spitfire will hold its price better and not be outdated by changes in the design.Still a very light boat to pull up the beach!.  Not a problem to right after a capsize. You also get to race Reg White at the opens  Most fun in a boat I've ever had.... although there was that time......

Best way is to have a sail, easily arranged through the class association.Then you can make up your own mind!

The Spitfire is a great boat, although dont buy one just because someone says its faster than a F18.

It isnt faster than an F18 but in some conditions it can get close. The Spitfire is a little twitchy due to its relatively short length, much like a Cherub. An F18 however is incredibly well behaved and is a true thoroughbred, in cat terms its a 49er, very smooth and controllable and can give you a kick in the ass when the wind gets up.
Only buy a Spitfire if your total crew weight is less than 150kg or it will bog down and sail like a pig. F18 is a much better weight carrying boat.
However for one-design racing Spitfire is great but only in the UK and France.
For worldwide recognition get an F18.
