Have just re-read the Y&Y review of the new J-70 lift keel sports boat. Went straight to Key yachting site for pricing information. Looks like a great little boat. Just the sort of thing I could get to grips with.
Andi's report was a bit light on the practicalities of ownership - as it was enthusiastic about how the J70 would render the SB20 and all for runners to the second division of desirability!
HOWEVER,
Both Key Yachting and the US based dealers all seem rather coy about pricing!
There is an indication on SA that by the time you have taken delivery with all that might be sensibly required for racing and transporting the tub there is little change expected from $45,000.00 in the USA. at a generous exchange rate that is about £38,000.00 in the UK. I will let others decide if that represents VFM.  Can anyone from Key Yachting refute or come up with a better more definitive figure? or is that against the rules of their marketing policy?  "Generate interest and keen enquiries, then hit them with what ever price we think they can afford? " or am I being too cynical?
Come on name the price dont be shy....

Interestingly we have a few groups wandering around our club looking for a good trailer sailor with a cuddy to build a fleet at our club on the Bristol Channel and have some good racing around the UK such as RTIOW. I pushed the article under a few noses this evening at our club night and it certainly gained some interest, but like you say the big questions is how much? I have to say the gut feel was a few k short of £38 so it isn't a million miles away and being a J it will hold its value, but a clear price from Key would be good to see. Note however that Key have an advert in the same issue clearly stating that the J70 and the GS43 are this years big show boats at Southampton, so I'd expect a price to be announced at the official launch in the UK at the show.

The British sports boat scene has always been SMOD-based and price a key ingredient. Neither 707s not SB3s were the best boats in their sector but they established themselves because they were the right price for the market.

The froth has come off the Solent sports-boat scene and a new class to invigorate it would be great. I'm not convinced the J70 is priced to fill that role but Key Yachting knows how to market in the UK and has a loyal customer base, so we shall see.

As for craiggo's good trailer-sailer, Helford River SC has recently built up a fleet of 2nd-hand 707s. There are an awful lot around looking for a new home that could doubtless be had at a good price. Just a thought.

Putting my 5pence worth - the J/80 class is still a very active fleet in the UK and the largest in the Solent and STILL growing. New and used sales are still on the up and we still have some of the best sailors in the country compete in this fantastic boat. We will be shortly relaunching our new improved website and are looking already at the next few years championships and possibly hosting a Europeans after our massively succesful Worlds in Dartmouth earlier in the year. 

The J/70 is fab, having test sailed it - it's key selling point to me is the ability to slipway launch.

While I don't think you can claim the J80 to be the largest fleet on the Solent I don't think the J70 will be the same sort of fleet here. I think the J70 will come into its own in places like Plymouth where launching from QAB on the slipway will be much easier than the alternative of being craned in every week. The Hamble has so many single point launching cranes that the J80 is really easy here, in other places it is less simple because you have to deal with travel hoists etc.
I think the big area where the j70 will (should!) thrive is in the national circuit type racing, it will be much easier to travel with than a J80 where most only travel for big events, worlds, nationals etc and most dont even bother doing that!

If you have test sailed it did they let you know the package price, incl Boat, Sails, Trailer etc?
If they are so confident its a winner why the big secret?

The review is gushing, to say the least, without really explainhg why it is (supposedly) better than the alternatives. The review also describes it as having a square top main, but the photo's show a very conventional looking sail, with the 'square' barely any bigger than a head board.

Why is the square top main and backstay a big thing on buying the boat?? I was invited to test sail the boat which we blasted up AND downwind on Southampton Water...certainly gave the smile required. As I was invited to make up numbers I didn't get the all up overall cost but I do think it was circa £37k including everything.

What you should also remember about the J/80 is that it is rated as Category B so more than capable then just playing in the daylight hours...that said the J/70 has been thoroughly thought about when it comes to sheeting loads and rarely was the word winch used

Come off it. There were more than double the number of SB20s (27) compared to J80s (12) entered in Cowes Week and both of those are little numbers compared to the XODs (83). I've nothing against J80s and have indeed enjoyed sailing them but that's just a silly claim.
