Shocked
Did Ainslie hit the mark?  They have cameras on all the boats, cameras on the jury boats and cameras on press boats and cameras on helicopters.  Where is the video footage of such a contentious issue?  The cameras on the boats will show whether  Hogh-Christensen and Dutchman Pieter-Jan Postma were actually looking, at the time Ainslie rounded the mark. Also Ainslie's camera will show something as will the overhead shot from the Heli and all the cameras on the following boats.  Where is the exciting footage?

If the Dane or the Dutchman were not looking at the time Ben rounded the mark then they should be disqualified from the Olympics.  Its as simple as that.

Has Ben Ainslie put a protest in for Rule 2?  No.... right then let's see it on the water, enough of the bullsh*t.

Probably, yes.

Do you think he's any less good at gamesmanship than the Dane?

By that logic if Ainslie did touch the mark then he should be getting a(nother) R69...

my point is, there was dispute on the water, he played percentages and took the turn.... move on, there's no story there.

Thats not quite correct about the cameras, there are only ever a 2, 3 maybe 4 boats in a fleet with caneras on, the rest are dummy boxes of the same weight, on the Lasers particularly its very easy to see which are cameras and which are dummys.

Given that from what I've seen there are only 2 helicopters with cameras then the chances of one being overhead at the time of the incident, and focused on the actual rounding is quite slim, especially as it wasn't a featured race at the time.

Ben will have know the situation and as I've said in another thread he's old enough and wise enough to know what the percentage play was, so he did a turn.

It is the Olympics so there should be full video footage of all mark roundings.
We are not talking about a club race here.
Is it too much trouble to have Jury Boats watching the marks?
There is a lot of wishful thinking goes on in dinghy racing.
I have been a victim too.
Why was this not a featured race?
If someone is good then it is not long before they get accused of hitting marks, missing marks or some other mythical misdemeanor. Jury boats keeping a close watch would solve this once and for all.

I think all evidence against fellow competitors should not be allowed.
I have seen no photographic evidence of Ben hitting the mark and believe him.

Is anyone else finding all this a bit unsavoury? Maybe I'm just getting old.

Any evidence of that? I'm not sure I've ever come across cheating like that. You're accusing two top class sailors of deliberate cheating.

Presumably we are mostly active racing sailors and should be aware that sometimes you are not the best judge of whether you touched a mark or not, other boats may be better placed. It was I think just last week I carefully eased my boat round the windward mark, watching it a good inch away from the hull, and said something like "missed it", only to be greeted with a call from one of my competitors "actually the end of your boom touched it"

Ben would have been well advised to keep his mouth shut about this in public. He's not doing himself favours in terms of fund raising for "Ben Ainslie Racing".
