Each individual (A-Class) boat seems to need an individual measurement certificate/rating under ISAF SCHRS - anybody have any examples...?

From memory they rate somewhere between 0.98 and 1; I'm at Grafham on Sunday and I'll ask if they have any values from the last Cat open.

Thanks Simon. A guy responded on the International A-Class forum and said that in Belgium they've standardised on 0.97.

That might be the texel rating, but somewhere around .97/98 is about right IMO.
Edit : Just checked the results for last years Cat open at Grafham and a handicap of 1.00 was used - generous IMO.... Edited by Scooby_simon |

He was definitely talking about SCHRS. I think it's right too (unfortunately)... QUOTE----- In Belgium the Multihull Association uses the (good old) ISAF SCHRS rating. END QUOTE -----

OK; this brings on another debate; Should SCHRS be revised as it's plainly been overtaken to some extent. The Tornado handicap has not changed when the carbon mast was added but talking to sailors they say it has transformed the boat - more power in the light stuff, but more control in the strong suff; F18's are way faster than they were 5 years ago, but the handicap has not changed. Opening the floor for debate..........

There was a 0.01 point penalty for carbon mast that was removed. They should have kept it. i think it is still a very valid system |

I agree SCHRS is the best we have at the moment; just think it might need a little tweaking. Planely a new Capricorn is way faster than a Dart Hawk, but the 101 for the F18 was decided when the hawk was around. |

Check out www.schrs.com and play with the calculator, For fun i put in the difference between the old mast weight of a Tornado and the new carbon mast (8KGs) it doesnt make a difference to the rating which means for years the tornado could have carried that much less weight from the platform without a penalty. If you take of just 1 more kg it drops to .93 so it rates right on the limit. As for the CMP being removed i think this was a fair decision at the time (when i sailed 5.9s at schrs events) and would be against it being used again, we have (this year) changed to a carbon mast this year and in fact have only just seemed to have got it performing better than our old ally stick and i must say the differences are marginal, Downwind it is quicker in the breezy stuff (20 knots plus) but only because of the less leverage allowing us to push harder. Upwind we have noticed very little difference in all of the ranges, the main differnce we have felt is just the weight difference between the two and of course its nice and easy to rig !!!!!! Also with the A class if you enter the values into schrs using the available class rules combined with the foil specs from the Bim 18 you get .98 !!!!!!!!! |
