I have been closely following the development of a report in to the health of youth/young adult sailing (and why people drop out of sailing in their droves at this particular stage of life) which is due to be published some time over the coming months.

Based on my own experience I personally think the suggestions that they have made are very wide of the mark. I am interested to find out what are the experiences of people on here of youth/young adult sailing.

Are many members on here sailors in that age group?
Do many of the more mature members sail at clubs with an active 16-24 section?
Do people know other sailors who have dropped out of the sport at this age?
What difficulties have people found in continuing to sail as a young adult?

I must admit that i think this covers me quite well, I am 21 just out of University where i didn't do much sailing at all. I think people of my age that have just started a career, is one a lack of money. I was lucky enough for my parents to pay for me to start sailing etc but now its left up to me, which is hard trying to save up to move out etc.

I was thinking about this again recently. There are all the usual reasons, work, money, family etc. but I wonder if loosing is less attractive as you grow up. Most clubs have "hot shots" who win everything and often reign for many years. Perhaps teenagers can do well in junior races but find it disheartening when they emerge on the adult scene and find it hard to do well.

From what I read before I posted this topic it seemed to be more about a younger age group and a solution to the problem. I want to know why it's happening.

If it helps, I am 15, and I don't think I will ever drop out of sailing, I am hooked for life!

Just wait till your at uni and get a good quality drinking habit, then you'll be saddled with debt and trying to save for a house deposit. Not much disposable income left when your in the early stages of your career. When the parents aren't paying, sailing can become a bit expensive.

Ok - thats a bit over the top and negative, but I do think disposable income has a lot to do with it.

I'm on reasonable money, but getting the extra cash for a new suit of sails or new boat can be a big ask. Especially when the girlfriend wants to become the wife and the house needs working on! Its hard being in that age group and I think thats a possible reason why people fall out until they have a bit more disposable income.

That's why I'm trying to get all of the stuff now from the parents, so I don't have to buy it when I'm at uni
