Does it work under load?.  Does it work when you don't want it too?  Unhappy

I'd say try one. It depends what you mean by underload. If you look at the design, it wont if you are on the wire due to it design. Is there a "recommended" QRH, the answer is no. It is all down to personal preference, some choose not to have a QRH at all. Do the RYA recommend one, no they dont either.

The RYA have now written a British Standard for QRH....the only problem is the manufacturers are not make one to the British standard !!!

Worked nicely in the shop, even under reasonable load.
If you would be able to press the small button in an emergency with gloves and everything is another question.

After some sailing it failed to release when 'testing' ashore and released without pressing the button while sailing. I guess the mechanism is just to complex for the environment it needs to work in.

IMHO the Magic Marine Release Hook in comparison is more difficult to release under load in the shop (friction), but way more robust and suitable for actual sailing.

Thanks skslr - very useful.  The harness is for my daughter and I'm looking for a reasonable solution for her to get out if the hook is caught (been there and done that myself on a 49er and its not a very pleasant experience)

I tried a used Magic marine harness and I couldn't see how it would release if you put any rotational load on it at all.

You said that the RWO one let go when it shouldn't have - was this sand/muck getting into the device or the mechanism just not being up to the job.

cheers

Mark

Well, I guess you have to unload the MM hook considerably unless panic gives you some superhuman strength. But at least it is not worse than having no release mechanism at all.

I believe that the RWO actually stopped working properly due to sand and/or salt residue in the more complex mechanism despite rinsing frequently.

To me you cannot protect your mechanism completely from salt and sand when sailing on the sea, so it should be designed to withstand that.

IMH I wouldnt recommend them have heard so many stories of them just falling off and have experienced my crew mate on the f18 loosing his hook!

- They cost lots of money to replace each time
-If they do release when not wanted to it spoils ur day sailing as you cannot use it anymore until the hook is replaced
- Often dont work
-Standard hook is safe just stay calm and to to release any pressure if caught and carry a knife!

I'd be interested in what an ISO-standard hook would comprise- though there's no way I'm going to pay for the Standard document. Any idea if anyone is working on an a compliant hook?

Mark, I can't comment on the actual use of each style as I only sold them. I never used one! BUT once it's been released I cannot see how the MM hook could possibly be re inserted into the harness without taking the harness off first. It's really difficult to put back on. The RWO hook on the other hand is really easy to re insert ready to use again. The RWO hook does have a hole in it for a piece of string to stop it being lost but would recommend the string being short and easily broken if required...

Thanks for all your comments.

Decided to go ahead with the RWO and make sure it is properly washed out every week - also got a spare hook to keep on the boat.

Its an expensive solution, but when you are under a boat and struggling to get free it suddenly seems very very inexpensive.
