Picked this up on the Boards Forum

Yesterday (3 May) all windsurfing was banned at Farmoor reservoir in Oxfordshire as a result of an incident at the weekend when a windsurfer allegedly swore at a Thames Water Ranger. This was communicated by e-mail to members by the Oxford Sailing Club Commodore, Chris Howe. The only exception is supervised windsurfing courses under the direct supervision of a senior instructor.
Farmoor is one of the largest inland sailing venues in England located a few miles west of Oxford city.
It is not clear how long this ban will remain in place. A meeting between Thames Water and the OSC Windsurfing Secretary (Russ Canning) is scheduled for Thursday 5 May.

Of course no sailor would ever swear, so the entire sport of windsurfing gets banned...

That's pretty damn shocking- though I'd like to know if there was more to the story (I'd guess there may well be).
Has there been a rash of windsurfers breaking TW imposed rules (regardless of how daft these may be), with this being "the last straw" as far as TW are concerned? Why were the windsurfer and Ranger even talking to one another? Has the ban been imposed from TW, or is the ban from the club?

I was a member a few years back. And there was always tension between Sailors and Thames Water's access requirements around the two lakes. It was stressed very heavily to avoid causing any obstruction. This is not always possible, as the main launch area butts up to the causeway between the second lake ( which has car access for TW and fishermen ), so it is a long standing issue. TW employees are not always to most polite of people in my experience at the club. The 'straw that broke the camels back' comes to mind. It is a big reason why I sail at BSC even though OSC is much closer and a bigger better water.

edit: not saying this was the cause of the issue, just a statement of my experience.

Are you refering to Amanda Van Santen who is the RYA windsmurfing and Sailing Rep (ok shorten title for what she is)? Surely no, as this is a personal issue between Thames Water and the Windsurfing at Farmoor?

Where the members who windsurfed their members of the sailing club as well? How did they gain rights to sail their?

(For all those wanting to see a picture of Amanda - http://www.yachtsandyachting.com/photos/misc/2007baban.jpg - 2nd from the right)

There's a bit of a thread on turnturtle talking about the decline in sailing generally and snotty attitudes around sailing and sailing clubs, not that in this particular case it's the club at issue, but generally inland water does have an extreme irritation factor at times and at some venues. If it aint the club it's the water board and if it aint them it's bloody fishmurderers or bird botherers..

It's hardly surprising sailing is in decline

It`s a bad day for water sports in general if just being a bit vocal to a "water ranger" - is that their real title? - is enough to ban a section of users totally.
There HAS to be more to this then just a word or two.
