Our club house is on 2 floors, bar, galley/social area are upstairs. Several of our older members can no longer manage the stairs. We have at least one member that is wheelchair bound.......
.....has anyone looked into stair lifts for sailing clubs or other accessibility options that won't break the bank. What has your club got in place?

hi, im a lift engineer, although, thankfully i dont work on stair lifts much,
stair lifts are ok but i would reccommend that you look into other routes before going down that road. stair lifts take up quite a lot of the stair room, if you were going for one, buy one from a major companys, avoid anything cheap, i think some companys rent stairlifts but i wouldnt reccommend that, personally i would look into having a disabled platform srcewjack type lift fitted, they come in a prefab shaft and a very adaptable, they also require little pit room, and with the dda act would be complient, if you could fit it to the inside of the building great, but if not they can be built alongside the building in a weather proof shaft (likely subject to planning consent) also consider the amount of use it would do, is there any other sort of lifting (other than people) i the building (beer barrells etc). the maintenance charges and contract levels you would want on the units, costing wise the stair lift would be much cheaper, but it will only lift people and up the stairs. pmme for my number if you want a chat or have a question i may be able to help, i may be able to help point you in the right direction to get the right lift for your clubs needs. |

I've got a secondhand stairlift sitting in my garage in Epsom at the moment...
Not enormously expensive to buy these things secondhand, but the stairlift companies charge you so much to install and fit them (and you really need to get it done by the manufacturer who know exactly what they are doing with their model) that the saving from a secondhand one over a new one isn't as much as one might hope (which is probably the idea!). I learned too much about this because my partner got the job of clearing the house of an old friend who went in a home, and we had to get the stairlift company to take out the thing, otherwise they wouldn't be prepared to put it back in... |

When our club got a lottery grant for a new clubhouse we would have needed a full lift installed if the club room was upstairs. The cost of installing and maintaining this was prohibitive for a small club like ours. We would also have lost a sizeable chunk of square footage on the ground level and upper level.
So we now have a club room at ground level and a disabled toilet and shower room where the lift would have been. We also have a stair lift for occasional use by the infirm if they are on duty. I have never seen this used by anyone needing it.
We are a small club and the cost of servicing would have been a great drain on our resources.

Thanks for the suggestion Marcus, I hadn't thought of a lift.
The lift would only be required for people and then only occasionally. Our Club President cannot manage stairs anymore + 1 or 2 other club stalwarts, Also 1 young member who currently gets a piggy back up the stairs.
I think the stairlift is the best option.
That does make sense, I suppose I'll have to give a Stannah a ring. They advertise recon models but it appears they will still have to construct custom rails that fit our stairs, also sevicing costs are no cheaper with a recon one....so as you say, not much saving to be made.

Remember to consider the evacuation requirements too.

And maintenance - they will need routine servicing and certifying for the club insurance

And depending on the sturdiness of the stairs there's always the stair crawler option.

We had one installed, it was there a few months and then disappeared. Not sure on the reasonning behind the install/removal but if its gone something wasn't right.

Hi All
My club looked at a stair lift but were told in no uncertain terms no by the fire officer as it would reduce the width of the current steep and narrow stairs to much. |
